Blue Sky Mind LLC ("Blue Sky Mind," "we," "our," or "us") develops software products for scientists and researchers. This Privacy Policy describes how we collect, use, and protect information across our products and services, including our website and the Momentum application.

We design our products using data minimization and privacy-by-design principles. Where our products are local-first, your data remains under your control.

1. General Principles

Across all Blue Sky Mind products and services:

  • We collect the minimum information necessary to operate our services.
  • We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information.
  • We do not use third-party advertising or tracking SDKs.
  • We do not use your data to train machine learning or AI models.
  • Where data is stored locally on your device, we have no access to it.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Website (blue-sky-mind.com)

When you visit our website, we may collect:

  • Server logs: IP address, browser type, referring pages, and pages visited.
    • Used for security and basic operational monitoring
    • Retained for a limited period (no longer than 90 days)
    • Processed by our hosting provider on our behalf
  • Contact information: Information you provide (e.g., name, email) when contacting us.
  • Cookies: Only essential cookies required for site functionality. No tracking or advertising cookies are used.

3. Momentum Application (macOS)

Momentum is a local-first electronic laboratory notebook.

3.1 Local-First Architecture

  • No user data is stored on Blue Sky Mind servers
  • No background data synchronization occurs
  • No telemetry or analytics are transmitted to us
  • All data remains on your device unless you choose to export or back it up

3.2 Profile Information

You may optionally provide:

  • Display name
  • Email address
  • Job title
  • Organization / department
  • ORCID identifier (optional)
  • Profile image (optional)

This information is stored only on your device and is never transmitted to us.

3.3 Experiment Data

All notebooks, experiments, and scientific content:

  • Are stored locally as Markdown and JSON files
  • Remain fully under your control
  • Are never accessed by Blue Sky Mind

3.4 Data Portability

Your data is stored in human-readable formats (Markdown and JSON), allowing:

  • Export
  • Backup
  • Independent use outside the application

3.5 In-App Purchases

  • Processed entirely by Apple via the App Store
  • We do not receive or store payment information
  • Apple may process purchase-related data under its own policies

3.6 Network Access

Momentum uses network access only to:

  • Validate and restore App Store purchases

No other data is transmitted to Blue Sky Mind.

3.7 Backups

All backups (e.g., Time Machine, iCloud) are controlled by you and governed by Apple's policies.

4. How We Use Information

We use limited collected information to:

  • Operate and secure our website
  • Respond to inquiries
  • Maintain and improve our products

We do not use personal data for advertising, profiling, or behavioral tracking.

5. Legal Basis (Where Applicable)

Where we process personal information, we rely on:

  • Legitimate interests: responding to inquiries, maintaining services
  • Consent: when you voluntarily provide information

We do not sell or share personal data, except:

  • With service providers (e.g., hosting providers, Apple App Store)

For Momentum:

  • Data is protected by the macOS App Sandbox
  • Security depends primarily on your device protections (e.g., FileVault, passwords)
  • No remote attack surface exists through our infrastructure

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have rights to:

  • Access personal data
  • Correct or delete data
  • Restrict or object to processing

Because Momentum is local-first, most data is directly controlled by you. For website-related data, contact us to exercise rights.

10. Data Retention

  • Website logs: retained for a limited period (typically 30–90 days)
  • Contact emails: retained as necessary to respond and maintain records
  • Momentum data: retained only on your device

11. Children's Privacy

Our services are not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.

12. International Users

We are based in the United States. If you access our services from outside the U.S., your information may be processed in the U.S.

13. Future Features

If future versions introduce cloud or external-service features:

  • They will be clearly disclosed
  • They will be opt-in where possible
  • This policy will be updated accordingly

14. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy. Changes will be reflected by updating the Effective Date.
